Eye Health
Oxidative and predominantly photo-oxidative stress are critical factors that influence eye health. The lens of the eye acts as a light filter for the retina and therefore is continually exposed to photo-oxidative stress. In the retina high levels of oxygen light and the more apparent blue light create an ideal environment for the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the membranes of visual cells.
Nature provided us with lutein and zeaxanthin antioxidant carotenoids found in the human retina and macula. Human eyes protect against natural levels of blue light but that protection declines with age as the light-capturing pigments lutein and zeaxanthin diminish from the retina pigment layer. Evidence suggests that supplementing with lutein and zeaxanthin has a profound effect against photo induced damage to the lens and the retina.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin Supplements
The Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST) of 90 men with multiple stages of macular degeneration received 10 milligrams of lutein 10 milligrams of lutein plus a multivitamin and mineral formula or a placebo for twelve months. The men who received lutein or lutein with antioxidants achieved significant improvements in the quality of their vision. The Zeaxanthin and Visual Function Study (ZVF) showed improvement in high-contrast visual acuity compared to the placebo group.
Antioxidants for Healthy Vision
In addition to lutein and zeaxanthin the healthy ocular lens is enhanced with the antioxidants vitamins C and E which play a vital role in controlling the production of oxygen and light-induced free radicals. Zinc is an essential mineral that has been shown to support visual transduction in the rod cells. A double blind placebo controlled trial of zinc supplementation found a significant reduction in visual acuity loss associated with macular degeneration.
Though the supplement formula recommended by the original AREDS included beta-carotene as the only carotenoid succeeding studies like the AREDS-2 found that replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin significantly reduced the development of macular degeneration.
